Spinach & Kale

Together provide non-heme iron (plant-based iron) alongside vitamin C — and pairing these two together is the most effective strategy for iron absorption from plant foods. Kale's vitamin C actively converts iron into a form your body can use.

🍊
Fresh Orange Juice

The vitamin C catalyst that makes this smoothie work as a complete iron-absorption system. Pairing non-heme iron with vitamin C can increase absorption by up to 300%. Also provides folate and potassium.

🎃
Pumpkin Seeds

A complete plant protein with all essential amino acids, plus an excellent source of non-heme iron, magnesium and zinc. A small amount adds significant nutritional weight to the smoothie.

🍌
Frozen Banana

Creates the thick, creamy base that makes green smoothies feel like a treat rather than medicine. Also provides potassium for muscle function and natural energy from complex carbohydrates.

Amanda's note

If you're feeling tired, drained or uninspired, your iron levels could be the cause. Insufficient iron means the body struggles to transport oxygen to your brain, muscles and every cell in your body. The genius of this smoothie is pairing spinach and kale (non-heme iron sources) with orange juice (vitamin C), which dramatically increases absorption rate. The orange and banana make the greens completely undetectable in flavour.
